Our Tree

Aidan was choking Brad while I was screaming, “Stop, Aidan! You’ll kill him!”

I woke up with my heart pounding. What was that about? I shook my head, trying to erase the image. I looked over at the clock and thought, great it’s three in the morning. I decided to go downstairs and have a glass of chocolate milk. I needed something to distract me, so I grabbed my phone manual and brought it upstairs.

I was sitting on my bed reading when suddenly I had an idea. I picked up my phone, texting: Hey u awake?

(Aidan) Yes. Can’t sleep.

(Me) Y?

(Aidan) U.

(Me) What about me?

(Aidan) Thinking.

(Me) I’m lying here waiting.

I turned off my light, lying back on the pillows.

(Aidan) Can u feel my breath?

(Me) Yes.

(Aidan) Can u taste my lips?

(Me) Uh-huh.

(Aidan) Do u feel my hands on your body?

(Me) Oh, Yeah.

(Aidan) I feel urs 2.

I was lost in the images, the fantasy so real.

(Me) I need & want u.

(Aidan) I know. Me 2. I’ll be there soon.

(Me) K. I luv u. Sweet dreams.

I fell asleep having the most sensual dream of my life.

Later when I woke up, it was to the squeal of a baby boy. I jumped up, threw some clothes on, and ran downstairs. “Jake!” I grabbed him, gently swung him around, and pulled him tight against my chest while kissing him over and over.

He shrilled, snuggling into me.

Tears of joy flooded my eyes. “Hey,” I greeted Brian and Hannah.

“Hi, there,” Brian replied.

“I’m so glad you guys are home.”

“So are we,” Hannah agreed.

“What’d they say?” I put Jake down so he could run around.

Brian answered, “Well, they need to run some tests for the next month, but so far he seems to have fully recovered.”

I inquired, “When will they start the tests?”

“First one will be next week.”

Hannah walked over, put her arm around me and said, “Maybe you can come with. I hear we have some shopping to do.”

My face lit up. “Yeah, I think we do.”

We started talking about dresses and the best places to look for one.

A little while later Brian came around the corner. “Hey, babe, Little Guy’s getting tired, so I’m gonna go lay him down.”

I offered, “You guys stay here and hang out. I’ll go lay him down.” I took Jake upstairs to my room, gently laying him on my bed. I stood there for a minute as emotion overtook me. I was so grateful he was healthy again. “Thank you,” I whispered my prayer of thanksgiving.

I walked quietly downstairs. My family was engaged in conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt, so I went outside to the barn.

Brad pulled up, rolling down his window.

I greeted, “Hey.”

“Hi. I’ll only be a minute.” He seemed to be in a hurry.

“’Sup?”

He handed me an invitation. “I needed to give you this.”

I opened it, recognizing it was from his rehab clinic. “They have graduations for rehab?”

He chuckled. “No, it’s a celebration for completing the program. Don’t worry its alcohol free.”

We both laughed.

“That’s great, Brad. I’ll try, but no guarantees.
